Saskatchewan Heavy Equipment Training School - HEO or also known as the heavy equipment operator courses would provide you with the knowledge and skills required to be able to enter the workforce as an entry level heavy equipment operator. In this 12 week course along with a practicum, you will focus on jobsite fundamentals such as: safety, health and environmental training and awareness, equipment maintenance and operation, and application of earth moving techniques in hands-on situations.

This training helps you to operate on chosen items of machines like for instance a loader, compactor, dozer, grader and an excavator. There are several vital skills needed to become a heavy equipment operator: excellent oral communication skills, excellent problem solving skills, good spatial ability and excellent vision, physical stamina and strength, the ability to work alone or well with others in a team and good manual dexterity along with good eye-hand coordination.

Technical skills are also necessary to operate these equipment. These skills consist of: being able to operate equipment and power tools, general mechanical ability, knowledge of safe working procedures, the ability to follow grade plans, technical specifications and read instructions, the ability to make mathematical calculations and basic measurements, and the ability to perform basic mechanical repairs and maintenance.
