How to Handle Loads Safely

Do not lower or raise the fork when the lift truck is moving. A load should not extend higher than the backrest due to the risk of the load sliding back in the direction of the operator. Check for overhead obstructions and ensure there is adequate clearance prior to raising a load. Stay away from overhead power lines. Once the load is lifted straight up, tilt it back slightly.

The lift truck is less stable when a load is in a raised position. Make certain that no body ever walks beneath the elevated fork. The operator should never leave the forklift while the load is raised.

While handling pallets, forks should be high and level enough to go into the pallet and extend all the way below the load. The width of the forks must provide even weight distribution.

Before loading or unloading the truck, set the brakes and chock the wheels. Floors should be strong enough to support the weight of the forklift and the load combined. Fixed jacks can be installed to be able to support a semi-trailer that is not coupled to a tractor. The entrance door height should clear the forklift height by a minimum of 5 cm. Mark edges of rail cars, ramps or docks and avoid them.

Do not stay inside a forklift for a long time without correct ventilation. The interior of the truck should be well lighted and free of trash, loose objects and obstructions. Inspect for holes in the floor. The installation of nonslip material on the floor will help avoid slipping. Clear whatever obstacles from dockplates and docks and make certain surfaces are not wet or oily.

Lift trucks must not be utilized to push or tow other forklifts.
